SHAPPY:
My favorite potato chip in the world is the Lays KC Masterpiece
Bar-B-Q chip. It's really not even close. My second favorite is just a
plain potato chip, and I'm not a huge fan of plain potato chips, so
you can see the size of the gap between most chips and Lays KC
Masterpiece BBQ chips in my mind.
DAVE: Where are you going with this?
SHAPPY: I think you know exactly where I'm going with this.
DAVE: Oh...ok...
SHAPPY: So I get all excited about going to Kansas City, because
it's the home of the KC Masterpiece BBQ chips and various sauces. So
Dave says, "Oh my friend Gary Lifchus recommended a great ‘grill' for
when we're in KC!" So, I'm thinking, grill, BBQ, this is going to be a
KC masterpiece!
DAVE: Well it turns out Gary sent us to a grill alright, but it
was called Fuji. Now I did start to question a BBQ place called Fuji a
couple weeks ago, but I have a lot of trust in Gary and figured Fuji
was an acronym for Fire Under something or other...
SHAPPY: Excuses, excuses. We show up to Fuji and it's a grill
alright, with Japanese chefs behind grills cooking up traditional
Japanese meals. BLAST!! Dave!!!! Gary!!!
DAVE: I know, I know...I should have looked it up online, but hey
it wasn't bad.
SHAPPY: Well, no it wasn't bad, it was great actually, but it was
not KC BBQ by any means. I enjoyed the shrimp, and the lobster, and
the steak, the rice was delicious, and I loved the soup and the salad,
and the sherbet and cookies were wonderful, and the beer was great,
but it was NO KC Masterpiece! So I called my boy Josh Strom, who knows
KC pretty well, told him of my BBQ woes and he recommended a place
called BB's Lawnside BBQ...now that sounds like a BBQ!
DAVE: Let's go there tomorrow night then...do they have music?
SHAPPY: Yup, blues! You down for some more blues?
DAVE: Hells yeah.
SHAPPY: The show for tonight was at a bar called the Trouser
Mouse Bar & Grill. It was recommended by a guy we met at Blues on
Grand in Des Moines during the Dave Hole show. The band was out of
Philly and called Trampled Under Foot, or TUF for short. Let me tell
you something people, it's not just cause these guys are from Philly,
and I love Philly, but they rocked!
DAVE: The band is made up of siblings Nick, Kris, and Danielle
Schnebelen and a good friend Liam Goodrick on piano, and they are
originally from KC, so they had a huge crowd out at the show.
SHAPPY: Now of course I come in thinking, ok these young white
kids are going to sing the blues? Lemme see something. And from the
start I was blown away. Nick is sick on the guitar, rockin his staple
pants with patches all over the bottoms of the legs, a style I might
just steal and take to LA with me.
DAVE: Well let's talk about Danielle. We haven't seen a female
vocalist like her on this trip. She was awesome.
SHAPPY: Oh yeah, she could wail! Like a Joss Stone type, where you
see her and you don't expect the bluesy soulful voice she has, but
there it is, blowing everybody in the bar away.
SHAPPY'S OVERALL RATING: Awesome band. Hopefully they've become
Eagles fans.
DAVE'S OVERALL RATING: A modern day Von Trap family. But
cooler.
TOMORROW: KC day #2...and Shappy finally gets his BBQ with a
side of the blues.
SONG OF THE DAY: I Just Want to Dance by Trampled Under Foot.
